Great Dane

A.K.A. : Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff
Overview: The Great Dane is a huge dog with a sweet and gentle nature. He needs a lot of space for exercise, though he can be very calm and well-behaved indoors.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): 100-120
Height (in): male: 30-32, female: 28-30
Colors: Brindle, black-masked fawn, blue, black, harlequin (white with irregular black patches). Mantle (black and white)
Coat: Hair is short and smooth.
Character: Great Danes are affectionate, calm, loyal, and intelligent. Although they do not bark very much, they make great watch dogs.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They are usually wary around strangers, but are good with welcomed visitors.
Care: The Great Dane should be grooming with a rubber brush during periods of shedding.
Training: This breed grows quite large, so for an early lesson he should be trained not to pull on the leash. He's quite eager to please, so a proper approach should provide great results.
Activity: The Great Dane needs a lot of exercise, including being able to run freely off the leash in open countryside.
Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries.
Life Expectancy: 6-8

More About Great Dane Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I am completely house broken, and I love to eat! Unfortunately, previously I was not treated as well as my new foster mommy has been treating me, so I am very skinny. I was never shown that a crate is not a bad place to be, so do not do well in a crate but can easily be confined using a baby gate or dog gate. I do not understand steps, so a home that doesnt have a lot of steps or is willing to help me understand steps is ideal for me! I am being fostered in Lewis Center, OH. Zeke is housebroken and crate trained although he prefers to lie around on his bed. He loves people and can tolerate other dogs but would be best with a home of his own. He enjoys getting attention and laying in the sun. He should have a 6 foot privacy fence due to his size. Zeke rides great in the car and walks beautifully on the leash. He adjusted well to his foster home and foster siblings and has not shown any toy or food aggression. Zeke is trustworthy in the home but because of his height does counter surf. He is well mannered and does not jump on people. He has a great temperament and is very laid back. He is slowly learning how to play with toys and with his foster siblings. He spends most of his time sleeping. He is not the typical Velcro Dane but will definitely come looking for you when he wants some love and affection. He gives great kisses! Posted Breed: Saint Bernard. Adoption Fee: $350. Fill out an Adoption Application Hi there, I’m Hetfield! I’m a bouncy ball of fluff and love any attention that I can get. I ended up in the shelter for neglect and had to stay there for a few months but Mastiffs to Mutts came and busted me out of the joint! I’m about 18 months old and recently neutered. I didn’t mind my manners and leave it alone so I’m taking a little longer to heal but I’m doing much better now! I prefer to sit on your lap and not the ground because, well, the ground isn’t comfy and doesn’t have arms to scratch my ears. I love help catching my tail, that thing just follows me around and often eludes my stealthy moves to catch it. Don’t bother throwing a ball for me, I just look at you with confusion, why would you do that? I know sit, down and shake but my foster mom says I need to go to school to learn how to stay on all 4 legs. I prefer to walk myself on a leash but I’m learning that isn’t how it is supposed to work. Good news though, I know to potty outside, no accidents inside for me! My perfect home would have a tall fence because I channel my inner horse and glide right over short fences. My foster family tells me that I’m big (120lbs and growing since I’m underweight), but I don’t think so, so my forever family should know about big dogs, especially if they have kids! Once I’m healed up more I’m going to get to play with the other dogs in the house but for now we are taking it slow, I don’t want them to get too close to my sore spot. I did great with dogs at the shelter and the AC Officer that saved me came to say goodbye to me when I left with the whole family – including kids, which I loved! My foster mom and dad say I’m just a giant puppy full of energy. If you have questions please ask my foster parents or Mastiffs to Mutts more about me, I can’t wait to find my forever home!! Until then, I'm hanging out in Camp Hill, PA with my foster family. Application Fees, Adoption Donations and Rescue Policy: Please know that 100% of our funds are used for rescuing the dogs. Our rescue policy requires the following: Adopters must have their primary residence in one of the following states: Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and parts of North Carolina. Or if you have already given up on exercising this year I make an excellent co-pilot on my daily car rides into town where I like the amazing people at Starbuck's and Chik-fil-A. I love all the females of the canine persuasion, but I am choosy about my male canine companions. And I absolutely cannot share my home with any deceptive and cunning felines (in other words, NO CATS!) As you can see I'm a very handsome 2-3 year old neutered male Great Dane/Lab mix. I have had a rough start to life, and I would love to have a home to call my own. I need someone to cuddle up with late at night and doesn't mind if I steal the covers (which I ALWAYS do). Someone who enjoys short leisure walks and doesn't get jealous when others check out my back end (I got a waddle and unique tail). I'm all about fun and I love to play. I'm super into toys and don't mind a dip in the water once in a while. I also love to sunbathe and run around a fenced-in yard. I am so loyal and will always ask about how your day was and I'll show you how happy I am to see you. I promise to spend the rest of my years making you laugh, because I am a complete goofball. But, I am pretty clingy, and love to be right on your heels because I am just so full of love and I cannot contain it so I need someone that loves a cuddle buddy 24/7. I am better with older children because I cannot contain my excitement to see my family, I can become too rough for small children. I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone. Due to my past, crates are my least favorite place to be, but I most definitely love having a fenced in yard and should go to a home with one. Dogs? I really am an idependent man and quite stingy. A home without other pups runnning around would suit me the best! I tend to see small animals as a toy, and will chase them so cats, and other small animals are not the best for me. I am currently being fostered, and spoiled rotten of course, in Williamsport, PA. Can you give me the only Christmas present I have asked Santa for, and give me a home to call my own?
