Great Dane

A.K.A. : Deutsche Dogge, German Mastiff
Overview: The Great Dane is a huge dog with a sweet and gentle nature. He needs a lot of space for exercise, though he can be very calm and well-behaved indoors.
Breed Group: Working
Weight (lbs): 100-120
Height (in): male: 30-32, female: 28-30
Colors: Brindle, black-masked fawn, blue, black, harlequin (white with irregular black patches). Mantle (black and white)
Coat: Hair is short and smooth.
Character: Great Danes are affectionate, calm, loyal, and intelligent. Although they do not bark very much, they make great watch dogs.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets. They are usually wary around strangers, but are good with welcomed visitors.
Care: The Great Dane should be grooming with a rubber brush during periods of shedding.
Training: This breed grows quite large, so for an early lesson he should be trained not to pull on the leash. He's quite eager to please, so a proper approach should provide great results.
Activity: The Great Dane needs a lot of exercise, including being able to run freely off the leash in open countryside.
Country of Origin: Germany
Health Issue: The breed is prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries.
Life Expectancy: 6-8

More About Great Dane Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Grace is only 2 years old so she is has all the energy of a puppy with the perk of being potty trained! Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: English Mastiff. Adoption Fee: $175. Fill out an Adoption Application Don’t let her grey face fool you- this southern girl is younger than she looks. Her original paperwork guessed she was 7 but vets concur her teeth are in good enough condition to indicate a few years younger. Sadie is a spayed English Mastiff who is currently recovering from Heartworm treatment and will be available for adoption soon. She also has a small cherry eye but the Vet opted out of surgery as he feels it is cosmetic and not doin there any harm. She is crate trained and food motivated. She has a high prey drive and therefore cannot be placed with cats or small animals of any kind. She tested well with a giant breed female dog and will be retested with males in a few weeks. She loves everyone she meets but likes to keep her people safe so she protects her yard from intruders. She will need her people to let Sadie know it’s okay for strangers to come in. Once she falls in love with you she’s a Velcro dog and will give you nuzzles for attention. However, Sadie is low maintenance. She’s content with a comfortable bed and a few pets every once in awhile. She is completely house-trained and has never had an accident in the house since coming to her foster home. She is not comfortable with stairs and will not go up more than a few stairs so she would do best in a ranch style home. She is a sweet, affectionate girl waiting for her family to call her own. Posted Breed: American Bulldog. Adoption Fee: $225. Fill out an Adoption Application Are you the one for me? I am a handsome, single guy looking for a lifetime commitment. I have had a rough start to life, and I would love to have a home to call my own. I need someone to cuddle up with late at night and doesn't mind if I steal the covers (which I ALWAYS do). Someone who enjoys short leisure walks and doesn't get jealous when others check out my back end (I got a waddle and unique tail). I'm all about fun and I love to play. I'm super into toys and don't mind a dip in the water once in a while. I also love to sunbathe and run around a fenced-in yard. I am so loyal and will always ask about how your day was and I'll show you how happy I am to see you. I promise to spend the rest of my years making you laugh, because I am a complete goofball. But, I am pretty clingy, and love to be right on your heels because I am just so full of love and I cannot contain it so I need someone that loves a cuddle buddy 24/7. I am better with older children because I cannot contain my excitement to see my family, I can become too rough for small children. I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone. Due to my past, crates are my least favorite place to be, but I most definitely love having a fenced in yard and should go to a home with one. Dogs? I love to have a playmate, but I’m a bit picky. I need a friend that is willing to share, that is including you and my toys – preferably someone that is laidback and can tolerate my unconditional love towards playing. I tend to see small animals as a toy, and will chase them so cats, and other small animals are not the best for me. I am currently being fostered, and spoiled rotten of course, in Williamsport, PA. Can you give me the only Christmas present I have asked Santa for, and give me a home to call my own?
