#13: Rottweiler

The Rottweiler is a medium-large breed of dog descended from the Roman guard and herd dogs that the Romans brought with them across the Alps. Rottweiler type dogs were found from Switzerland well into Germany. The dogs were used to herd cattle and guard important sites like logistics centers. Long after the Romans left, the dogs remained. They soon graduated from guarding the cattle, to pulling the butcher's wagon and guarding his meat. This is where the breed, which we recognize today as the Rottweiler, got its start.

The Rottweiler is large and very muscular, yet compact. It is a very powerful dog. Therefore, it needs to have a firm handler due to its aggressive and protective nature. It has a square appearance with a broad head and muzzle. The coat is always black with rust markings.

The "Rotti" is a very intelligent and obedient dog with a calm, confident nature that makes them good working dogs. They are very protective of their family and slow to make friends with strangers. Today they are popular with police and military the world round. Because of their strength, they do need a strong handler in police work. Some departments no longer use Rottweilers due to the damage they can inflict with a single bite.

When looking to get a Rottweiler as a pet, make sure that you find a reputable dealer. In fact, this is the only way to pick any good pet. The Rottweiler's popularity has been its downfall. Many are bred by people with little idea of how or why they breed dogs (except to get money). Even in the best Rotti, its protective nature can turn to aggression or fear towards strangers when they are not properly socialized. This is an active dog that requires work and activity to keep it happy. The breed needs to be handled with a firm hand and lots of consistency. It will seek to be the top dog and needs to be taught with gentle firmness.

The Rottweiler is often too much dog for a family and home. It needs room to roam and play and can easily destroy a house (unintentionally). If you have a large active family and can handle a large, strong willed dog, the Rotti might be the dog for you. If you give your Rottweiler lots of room and activities, and of course lots of love - you will find it to be a good companion.
